Dakshinkali
Dakshinkali is situated 22 km to the south of Kathmandu, near the village of Pharping. It is one of the main temples dedicated to goddess Kali, the fearless form of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. The word Dakshinkali is a combination of two words Dakshin implying south and Kali, the Hindu Goddess. So Dakshinkali means the Goddess Kali of the South. Dakshinkali temple timings are flexible as temple opens at 6 in the early morning and closes at 9 in the night. The goddess Kali is an incarnation of Adi Shakti, the prime goddess of the creation itself. Goddess Kali is believed to became so angry that she started to end every being in the universe. Troubled by the sight, Devas pleaded to Shiva to stop her, who in turn, laid down in her way to make her calm. The deity in the temple is a black stone, symbolizing a six-armed Kali standing on a prostrated figure of Shiva. The Goddess is offered animal sacrifices, particularly that of cocks and rams usually. This offering is prominently made on Tuesdays and Saturdays and occasions such as Dashain festival that occurs in September/October.
